Nervous System Part 3
Osteopathic Pathways from Emotion to Inflammation
William Foley D.O., M.Sc
This advanced osteopathic course invites practitioners into a dynamic exploration of the pathways that link emotion and inflammation, approached through the integrated relationships of the brain, heart, gut, and the organizing presence of the Tide. Grounded in cranial and biodynamic osteopathy, the course emphasizes perception, Stillness, and the recognition of living anatomy as expressions of an inherent therapeutic intelligence.
Through lecture and experiential practice, we begin with Perception and the Living Anatomy, cultivating the practitioner’s ability to sense the subtle ordering forces within the system. Anchored in Stillness and the Breath of Life, this work invites a shift from doing to receiving, allowing Primary Respiration and the Tide to reveal patterns of health and imbalance.
At the crossroads of autonomic regulation and inflammatory processes, we will explore the vagus nerve as a central mediator between brain, heart, and gut. Particular attention will be given to its role in modulating inflammation and restoring parasympathetic tone, illuminating how osteopathic engagement can support systemic coherence.
In The Amygdala and Emotional Rescue, we will examine the limbic system as a key interface where emotional experience meets physiologic response. This exploration highlights how unresolved emotional states can contribute to inflammatory patterns, and how the practitioner’s attunement to Stillness can create conditions for neurologic and emotional reorganization.
We will also investigate the enteric nervous system, the “second brain” of the gut, as an essential participant in this continuum. Its dynamic dialogue with the central nervous system reflects a deeper integration of function where digestion, emotion, and immune response intersect within the fluid body.
Finally, in The Cranial Vault Revisited, we return to the foundational structures of the cranial mechanism, exploring how they express and mediate the forces of the Tide. This offers a refined understanding of how the cranium participates in regulating the broader network connecting Primary Respiration to inflammation and emotion.
Throughout the course, emphasis remains on the practitioner’s perceptual development, learning to listen deeply, to engage from neutrality, and to support the body’s inherent capacity to move from dysregulation toward balance.
“The Tide is not a technique. It is an invitation to listen to what is already there.” — James Jealous, D.O.
“To find health should be the object of the doctor. Anyone can find disease.” — A.T. Still, M.D., D.O.
This course is designed for osteopaths who are called to work at the subtle interface of body, mind, and spirit—where emotion and inflammation meet, and where the wisdom of the living system reveals pathways toward integration and healing.
